Some people like to count steps. I like to inventory them. Let’s take a step inventory. What's a step inventory, you ask? Well, it’s a simple way to review the skills and experiences we’ve gained throughout our careers - the steps we’ve taken 😊

New to the workforce or have been in it for some time? Taking a step inventory will provide valuable, reflective insights!

Have you been in one role? What steps have you taken to maintain and excel in that role?

Been in a few roles at the same company or moved to a new company? What have you carried from one role to another? What skills and experiences facilitated those steps?

Titles don’t move with us, but skills and experiences do. They shape our careers and facilitate change.

Identifying the skills and experiences gained at every step provides valuable information to support your current and future goals. Taking an inventory keeps you sharp in your current role, creates awareness of what you might need to “step" into your next role, and offers a degree of protection against market and industry shifts by highlighting skill portability.
